2008 sees Science Outside the Square (SOS) enter its fourth fabulous year.
With innovative topical events on some of the science that matters most, SOS helps free science and scientists from the lab, and is an exciting way to access science of all sorts. There's something for everyone.
SOS events bring together scientists, artists, musicians, athletes and people from all walks of life to discuss 'hot' issues in science, exploring the challenges and promise of science and technology in shaping our current and future society.
If you missed out on our previous offerings or checked out an event or two and liked what you saw, you'll love 2008! This year we will be bringing you even more of what you crave; just watch this space

September 2008
ID: the quest for identity
When: Wednesday 17 September 2008, 7.30pm–9.30pm
Where: The Capri Theatre, 141 Goodwood Road, Goodwood, Adelaide
How: Free but ticket required – book via Bass on www.bass.net.au/sots2008/What does it means to be human in a world of rapid change, where we face an inspiring challenge to embrace creativity and forge our own identities?
Two huge forces – new technologies and old ideologies – are, in their different ways, combining to threaten our control of our minds. We have never more urgently needed to look at what we want for ourselves as individuals, for our children and for our future society.
All this inevitably poses many questions about human nature, our past, what makes us individual, the connection between the brain and the mind, the threats to our individuality from modern living, and what a society of fulfilled individuals would actually mean…
Big questions indeed, but ones that Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield will – ‘in conversation’ with award-wining broadcaster and host of ABC Radio National’s 'All in the Mind', Natasha Mitchell – attempt to answer. Drawing on the latest findings in neuroscience, they will together explore how far we are and can be in control of the development of our brains and minds and look at how we can safeguard our individuality and find fulfilment. This event will be followed by an opportunity to purchase signed copies of Susan’s latest book ‘ID: the quest for identity in the 21st century’ (Hodder and Stoughton).
